Leading UK lighting and visuals rental company HSL supplied lighting equipment to Rita Ora’s first full production tour which blasted its way round the country, with a fabulous lighting design by Andy Iliffe.
The critically acclaimed chart topping singer-songwriter’s show is sexy, sassy, full on and highly theatrical, featuring an impressive array of props and stunning costumes in addition to her vibrant performance.
HSL’s Mike Oates Project Managed and comments, “Rita Ora is one of the hottest emerging talents in the UK, and Andy’s light show was every bit as original and exciting as her stage presence. We are extremely proud to be involved!”
Andy has worked with Rita Ora for the last four months. The first shows were promos, for which HSL supplied some ‘specials’ packages. Having worked with the Blackburn based company for around eight years, it was a ‘no-brainer’ for Andy when it came to recommending a lighting company to service the tour. “When given the choice, it will always be HSL,” he declares!
His dynamic touring rig for Ora’s energy fuelled ‘Radioactive’ tour was completely floor based. At each venue he also hooked into a front truss prepared to their LX spec with More >
For the third year running HSL was working for Electric Fly Productions, whose Philip Winward and Nick Jevons created the production lighting, video and show designs for the main stage, 4 indoor arenas, 2 terrace lounges and the VIP zone, working for promoters Angel Music.
HSL’s Tim Fawkes managed the project , which involved 5 x 45ft trailer loads of kit, including trussing and rigging, which he also co-ordinated on site, in close collaboration with Electric Fly’s hand-picked crew of lighting technicians/operators and riggers.
“HSL as always have provided brilliant service, great value and immaculate equipment,” comments Jevons, “We could not do a production of this scale without this level of excellence”. Also supporting the event with equipment were key manufacturers including Avolites, i-Pix, Green Hippo, Martin Professional and Robe.
The different area’s designs were all based around moving lights – primarily Robe – and a combination of PIXLED F30 or Martin Professional LC More >

Lighting designer Davy Sherwin has put together a stunning show based around an inventive design that makes the rig appear vastly bigger than it actually is. He first met the band when they were supporting Snow Patrol, for whom he has worked for several years producing some amazing shows, and they wanted a similar vibe, and something that suited their energy and ballsy music.
The band gave Sherwin a few basic pointers in terms of what they wanted incorporated in the show, and then left him to it. They are very dynamic to light, with the music veering from moody and dark to percussive and shouty to full sensory absorbing rock out!
They particularly wanted multiple shades of blue, so the show errs towards the colder end of the spectrum in terms of colour, together with some classic and classy white moments, More >
Technical production was co-ordinated by Production North and the lighting design was by Peter Barnes.
The show united a galaxy of stars – including Tom Jones, Joss Stone, Robert Plant, Lulu, Hot Rats, Razorlight, David Gray, Ronan Keating, Gabriella Cilmi, Dan Gillespie Sells and others. It featured some amazing performances and unique collaborations that made it a very memorable and special evening.
Barnes’ rig consisted of 4 trusses – a straight one upstage and three chevron-shaped over-stage, staggered in length at 32, 20 and 12 ft a side, and raked at slightly different heights. This created an architecture for the space and a visually interesting view of the stage as well as increasing the scope and depth of the moving lights hung on the trusses, allowing them a really dynamic focus range.
It was a charity event, so the principal goal was to deliver a design that was cost effective and highly flexible, with enough latitude to allow a spectacular light-show for all the artists appearing in the two and a half hour performance.
